Geolocation, the iPhone and Flickr

One thing I was really excited about in the new iPhone 2.0 software was this ability to have Flickr automatically map photos you took with your iPhone. When I tried doing this however, it didn’t work. It turns out this feature is turned off by default, and you have to manually enable it on your account settings page. However, even once you do that something still seems to not be working quite right. My test photo put me in the Yellow Sea off the coast of China, along with a lot of other people from San Francisco.

Two more warnings: If you try e-mailing your photo to Flickr, all the EXIF data (including GPS data) gets stripped out. I haven’t tried and 3rd party uploaders yet on the iPhone, but uploading it from your computer with the Flickr Uploader keeps the data. Also, I’ve had my camera stop recording location info. You can fix this on your iPhone by going to Settings > General > Reset >Reset Location Warnings. Then restart your phone, and the next time you launch the camera it should ask to use your location data.

I’m hoping this works seamlessly soon - it’s a pretty cool feature. Here’s more discussion at Flickr, and at Apple.
