Here is a little search engine optimization tip you may not have thought about. It is generally not a great idea to tell the Google spider that not a single page on your site can be found. Somehow back in October UXrepublic started returning 404 errors to spiders whenever they tried to access a page on the site. I say “somehow” like I have no idea how it happened, but it was totally my fault.
In an attempt to build friendlier URLs I used the wrong type of redirect command on the server and as the chart above shows, killed our traffic from search engines. The best part is that this bit of brilliant programming came almost immediately before an unscheduled three month hiatus from doing nearly any work on the site. I’ve finally fixed everything, but feel a little foolish for letting it happen in the first place.
The lesson here is simple: If you have something that you want to have disappear from the internet, I am your man.
